Designer Notes:

“Aspire To Inspire Before You Expire,” is a saying that resonates with a lot of people. At the base level, it serves as an encouragement to do all that you do with passion and vigor until you are no longer able. More so than that, a saying can remind you of a loved one that embodies that proverb with what they do, how they act, what they say, how they interact with others, and so much more. This causes the initial phrase to carry more weight, and have more power than it initially had in the beginning, since it can connect us mentally and emotionally, to that loved one.

This design and phrase is a dedicated memoriam to a late loved one of the TeamSwoh(TS) family, so it was very important that there was thought and intention behind every aspect of the design from conception to completion.

The overall aesthetic is meant to pay homage to the early 90s, NES/SNES era, since that was a large source of love for the late loved one. Below is a look into each design element and how we achieved that.

The Aspire design is made up of three fonts, an early NES/SNES font, an old Super Mario font, and the TeamSwoh trademarked font. We wanted to grab aspects of beloved games and systems to hint back to pleasant nostalgia and reminisce about  household favorite games. “Inspire,” is the only word to not touch on this, since it is in the TS trademarked font because it represents how the loved one still inspires the TeamSwoh family to continue to act with passion, and vigor, and to pass that inspiration onto others. The “Expire” font is hand glitched for unique stylization, and to hint on the theme of loss, or something missing, in a subtle and tasteful way.

The three triangles in design are inspired by the Triforce from the Legend of Zelda series. The Triforce is made up of the traits Power, Courage, and Wisdom, and we wanted to pull those themes into the design itself. Triangles are also the shape that the human brain remembers the most. The triangles are intersecting to strengthen the overall shape, in addition to adding support and balance to the design while weaving into each other to form a sense of connectedness.

The 90s era loved bright colors, so it was imperative to incorporate some into the design. Keeping the theme of the design and the brand in mind, we picked red, blue, yellow and white. Red and Yellow are colors the brain sees the most, and remembers the best, and by throwing in a bright blue to round out and hit the technological notes of the design in a way that compliments both red and yellow, we found great eye catching colors to fit with the base white. Red and Blue are also present colors (Power and Wisdom respectively) in quadrants in the Triforce, with Yellow/Gold being used to symbolize the entire Triforce. White is a color used heavily in the TS brand, as well as it being used to reference the monochrome color history of early gaming.
Of course, there’s tons of meaning to be found within design theory. As the designer chosen to work on this project, I wanted to not only include mindful design, but to create a sense of beloved nostalgia that would be widely noticed and appreciated not only by the 90s gamer kids, but by everyone that might resonate with the Aspire message. I hope you appreciate it as much as I do.
